I read that often on photographers web page or advertising. Well. yeah, natural light is the best light out there, no questions about it. Our eyes are "calibrated" to see everything in natural light. Photographers were/are used to it as the main source of light for their photos.Unfortunately the days with proper lighting are quite limited per year as well as the hours of the day when the light is proper for shooting. I have been a natural light photographer for way to long. Then one day I started to carry around my flash all the time, then a strobe head and a mobile power pack. Then everything changed. I was not relying anymore on the time of the day and of course, the weather. It's uncomfortable, I tell ya. Beside carrying some heavy camera and lens, now there is another few pounds of lighting, cables, umbrella, soft box, wireless triggers, name it. The result is still not guaranteed and there is more chance to ruin some equipment on daily basis, which of course cost some dough. The wind loves the umbrellas and we have plenty of wind around here. People will trip on stands inevitably, never mind the dogs. Still, I find that the whole sweat is worth it. There are some shots lately that I would not have been able to pull off without some extra lighting aid. Of course you can use some reflectors (they love the wind too) and various filters. For now I stick with my strobes. Sometimes I use the sun as key light , sometimes my strobe is the key light. It depends. More lights I use , less time I spend in Photoshop. Sometimes no matter how long you cling on to Photoshop, the result cannot match the effect of an extra strobe.Lately I stick my stand in a backpack, together with my power pack and the strobe is raised above my head like an antenna 2-3 feet. I must look like some captain Nemo crew member.
